SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — Carolyn McEnrue and Randy Turner were out at the San Angelo Area Foundation to speak to some organizations that are raising money during San Angelo Gives including Meals for the Elderly, Through God Comes Justice, Concho Valley Turning Point and Honor Flight Texas. Senora Scott also spoke with those at Sleep in Heavenly Peace and Keepers of Hope.

Meals for the Elderly development and marketing director Jessica Behringer explained how the group and its volunteers work to deliver between 600 and 700 meals to those in Tom Green County, Concho County, Irion County and Miles who are unable to cook or leave their homes.

"We cook every single one of those meals in our building then we deliver them," Behringer said.

Thanks to donations and donors, Meals for the Elderly has been able to serve San Angelo and the Concho Valley for 50 years.

"San Angelo Gives is really big for us because we don't get any kind of government funding," said Behringer. "We get grants and we rely on community donations."

Chaplain Dennis Trujillo with Through God Comes Justice explained how donations received on San Angelo Gives help their ministry provide bibles to inmates, conduct classes in the detention center and support inmates' family members through tough times.

Through the ministry's 27 years, Chaplain Trujillo explained that many lives of those incarcerated or those related to those in jail have changed whether it is through their Christmas program that helps provide inmates' children with gifts or the AA, NA, Celebrate Recovery or bible studies that are conducted in class at the jail.

With the help of San Angelo Gives, Through God Comes Justice is able to continue their outreach.

"This is our largest fundraiser throughout the whole year," Chaplain Trujillo said.

Another organization working to raise money to continue helping those in the area is Concho Valley Turning Point.

Executive director Maria Angelica Mejia explained how Concho Valley Turning Point helps those in need get their IDs, complete resumes, apply for jobs and more. The organization has even opened up a new women's home in the last 30 days that already has a waitlist.

"We try to provide love and family support for it and to help guide them to the next step but it is very hard," said Mejia.

Mejia explained that money raised during San Angelo Gives goes back to what Concho Valley Turning Point does.
"It goes straight back to what we do and those we serve so we help pay for IDs, help pay for surcharges, help pay for housing at a fraction of what regular cost would be."

McEnrue talked with David Obermiller who is with the Honor Flight Texas.

The Permian Basin Honor Flight just made their return from Washington D.C. During this trip, Obermiller explained that 12 San Angelo veterans received VIP treatment as they traveled to see the memorials and monuments raised in their honor.

"It is three days of letting these veterans experience things that are for them, especially the Vietnam veterans who didn't get a welcome home and didn't get to experience that," he said.
