SAN ANGELO, Texas - The Angelo State Athletic Department hosted its annual Holland's Sports Banquet on Monday night inside Junell Center/Stephens Arena, sponsored by Holland's Jewelry, honoring some of the best performances both in the classroom and on the field or court.
At the banquet, 13 students were given the Holland's award in their respective sports as voted on by their teammates. The winner exemplifies what it means to be an ASU student-athlete in competition, in the classroom, and in the community.
Taking home the award for their team were Justin Harris (Baseball), D.J. Freeman (Men's Basketball), Madeline Stephens (Women's Basketball), Tate Hughes (Men's Cross Country), Mary Brown (Women's Cross Country), Josh Body (Men's Track & Field), Maricia Spence (Women's Track & Field), Brayden Wilcox (Football), Eva Schwartz (Women's Tennis), Erin Plunkett (Softball), Lacey Stevens (Women's Golf), Katelin Heise (Soccer) and Evelyn Torres (Volleyball).
ASU also recognized 103 student-athletes were named to the 2024 Athletic Academic Honor Roll. To be selected, student-athletes must have at least a 3.2 GPA, must be a sophomore in athletic and academic standing, and have completed two semesters at ASU.
The Athletic Academic Excellence Award, a distinction reserved for the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA, is presented annually to one male and one female. These exceptional individuals have met the following criteria: maintaining a 3.25 GPA, being a junior or senior athletically, attending ASU for a minimum of two semesters, and exhausting one year of eligibility. The male recipient was Cody Kingman of Baseball and the female recipient was Madeline Stephens of Women's Basketball
The Golden Horn Award is given to a team for outstanding work in the community and athletic success. This award encompasses what it means to be a student-athlete at Angelo State and be committed to excellence in the classroom, in the community, and in the area of competition.
With 466 community service hours, a team GPA of 3.675, and a history of winning, the 2025 Golden Horn winner was Belles Volleyball.
Angelo State Athletics also named the 2025 Kathleen Brasfield Female Athlete of the Year, which was awarded to Katelin Heise of Women's Soccer, and the 2025 Phil George Male Athlete of the Year was given to Jacob Guerrero of Baseball.
Heise, a fifth-year senior from Lubbock, received a numerous awards and honors this season for her hard work on the pitch and in the classroom including: United Soccer Coaches (USC) Division II Scholar All-American, USC All-American Third Team selection, D2CCA All-South Central Region Second Team, All-South Central Regional First Team Honors, CSC Academic All-District Team, All-LSC First Team and LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll. The Exercise Science student made 21 starts this season, scoring two goals and making three assists in 1,839 minutes played, leading the Rambelles to the first Sweet 16 appearance in program history.
A pillar of consistency in the outfield in the last three seasons, Guerrero has led the Rams to back-to-back National Champion appearances, winning it all in 2023. The senior from Colleyville has broken the program record for Doubles in a Career, doing so against St. Mary's back on Mar. 1 and actively sits at 61 total as of the writing of this story. The accounting major is boating a .419 batting average and leads the No. 1 Rams in hits (65) and runs scored (59).
