SAN ANGELO – Angelo State senior and reigning LSC Hitter of the Week Averie Gunther made history on Friday evening at Mayer Softball Field, becoming the first athlete in program history to play all nine defensive positions in a doubleheader, doing so as the Rambelles cruised to a pair of five-inning run-rule wins over Sul Ross State, claiming game one 10-1 and game two 8-0.
Starting game one at her customary third base position, she played the first three innings at the hot corner before playing the fourth inning at second base. The next inning saw her feature in right field, center field, and shortstop.
The Wylie native started game two in the circle, throwing an inning before playing the next two innings at third. The fourth inning saw her play in left field, and she started off the fifth inning at first base before ending the frame behind the plate.
On the day, she reached base five times, recording four hits with two doubles, three runs scored, and three runs driven in. She threw a perfect first inning in game two and ended the day with four putouts and six assists in ten attempts defensively.
Back-to-back singles by Gunther and Lauren De La Cruz led off the second inning of game one, with Gunther scoring the first run on a fielder's choice. The second run would score on a two-out throwing error by the Lobos third baseman, extending the inning.
Tatiana Trotter would double to center field to score two runs, giving the Rambelles a four-run advantage.
The Rambelles would score five runs the following inning, all coming with two outs.
Two-out singles by Paris Brienesse and Abby Brand turned it over to the top of the lineup, with Erin Plunkett singling in a run before Laylonna Applin tripled in a pair of runs.
Trotter would cap off the inning with a two-run moonshot over the center field scoreboard, pushing the scoreline to 9-0.
A Bri Waters sacrifice fly would score the Rambelles' final run, with the Lobos scratching a run across in the fifth inning.
Cheyenne Floyd picked up her 19th win of the season, throwing four innings and allowing only two hits. Raegan Sucher would throw the final inning in relief.
The Rambelles struck first in the second game, with back-to-back doubles by Gunther and Zoey De Baca plating Gunther.
An RBI groundout would score the second run in the inning before Abby Brand's double would plate the third and final run of the inning.
Gunther would single in a pair of runs in the third inning to make the scoreline 5-0, and Plunkett would tack on an RBI single the following inning to extend the advantage to six.
Back-to-back doubles by McMillan and Gunther to lead off the fifth inning made it 7-0, and a De La Cruz pinch-hit single with the bases loaded scored the eighth run to force the run-rule win.
Gunther made way in the circle for Amelia Hatthorn, who pitched two innings en route to her 11th win of the season. Matie Wolkow threw the final two innings in relief, only allowing one baserunner via a hit by pitch.
The Rambelles improve to 35-9 on the season and 26-8 in LSC play. They are back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. to host UT Permian Basin, who are coming off a sweep at the hands of Lubbock Christian.
