SAN ANGELO, Texas – The top-ranked Angelo State baseball team saw its 2025 baseball season come to an end Friday night, falling to No. 5 UT Tyler, 10-9, in Game 2 of the South Central Super Regional at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.

The Rams conclude the year with a 48-10 overall record, including a 39-7 mark in Lone Star Conference play, capturing both the regular-season and tournament championships.

The game opened with early fireworks as Jacob Guerrero was hit by a pitch and Lane Hutchinson singled, setting the stage for Brett Smajstrla, who launched a three-run homer over the left-center field wall to give the Rams a 3-0 lead.

UT Tyler responded quickly. A two-out single and a walk came around to score on a double to left-center, cutting the lead to one. The Patriots surged ahead in the second, capitalizing on a throwing error and an RBI single to make it 4-3.

Angelo State bounced back in the third as Tayten Tredaway ripped a two-run double to left-center, reclaiming the lead. Guerrero added a two-RBI single up the middle in the fourth, scoring Justin Harris and Blake Wilhoite, who had reached on back-to-back singles.

But the Patriots answered again in the bottom half, regaining the lead at 8-7 on another throwing error and a three-run homer down the left-field line.

Dax Dathe was given the start in the game and he left it all on the mound, tossing five and a third innings, allowing three earned runs off nine hits and four walks while striking out six.

After a brief lull in the fifth and sixth, the Rams pulled ahead once more. RBI singles from Harris and Ethan Flodstrom in the seventh made it 9-8. However, the lead didn't hold, as a two-out hit batter and an RBI triple by UT Tyler against reliever Scott Ellis tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

In the ninth, the Patriots completed the comeback. An RBI single and an error put runners at the corners, and a shallow single to center scored the game-winning run, walking it off and ending the Rams' season.
