SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — Eleventh- and 12th-grade girls at Veribest High School had the opportunity to take a self-defense training course taught by the Gladiator Defense Group on Oct. 16.

The students listened to a lecture about self-awareness and engaged in a hands-on training session. Group founder and former defensive tactics instructor Carl McCoy said that men have physical capabilities that women don't, so "we have to teach the females some skill sets to negate that so they're able to defend themselves and escape."

Carl started the group after the daughter of one of his friends was almost kidnapped. He aims to teach girls how to prevent and protect themselves from unsafe situations.

Alexis Hurtman, a senior student, shared that she feels more prepared after participating in the class.

"You kind of make yourself feel bigger than them," Hurtman said.

She also encourages everyone to take a self-defense class if they have the opportunity.
