Description

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — Details regarding a stabbing incident that occurred on Sept. 14 and resulted in the activation of a SWAT team have been released through an affidavit filed in Tom Green County.

According to the affidavit, San Angelo Police Department officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of Howard Street in reference to a stabbing call. SAPD Police Chief Travis Griffith stated during a press conference held on Sept. 14 that the officers were called to the scene at approximately 4:47 p.m.

An investigator reviewed an email provided by an SAPD officer. The contents of the email stated that the 34-year-old victim claimed he was sitting outside of his home when "a Hispanic male approached him brandishing a large knife." The man with the knife was identified by another law enforcement member as 48-year-old Ricardo Rico.

It was learned from the email that Rico "began swinging the knife at the victim," stabbing him twice in the left leg. The victim would later be transported to the emergency room of Shannon Medical Center for emergency treatment.

The affidavit stated that Rico then ran to an apartment located in the backyard of a home on the 2100 block of Forest Park Avenue. He then shut the door on SAPD officers who attempted to contact him and did not exit the apartment.

SAPD Chief Travis Griffith stated during the press conference that multiple SAPD resources were used in response to the incident, including the SWAT team, a drone team, a K-9 unit, the Criminal Investigations Division and the Crime Scene Investigations Unit. A warrant was obtained for Rico's arrest, and he continued refusing to surrender, leading law enforcement to utilize chemical munitions. Rico would surrender without incident after the deployment of chemicals.

Rico was booked into the Tom Green County Detention Center at 9:55 p.m. on Sept. 14 with one charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He remains there as of the time of publication and has a posted bond of $50,000.
