Description
SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — Myers Drug, a drug store founded in San Angelo in 1934, has been purchased by grocery store chain Food King, according to a business representative. Here's what you need to know.
Luis Urteaga, general manager of the pharmacy's San Angelo location, stated that the business was purchased on Oct. 17 after the owner of Myers Drug decided to sell. The business was divided between two buyers, with the pharmacy operations going to Food King and the building going to Thieman Real Estate Holdings.
"The reason why we were acquired was because this business was a viable business, and we created another layer of pharmacy business that a larger chain pharmacy found attractive," Urteaga said.
Urteaga said that the pharmacy will be transitioned into the Food King located at 2 S. Main St., where a new, "state-of-the-art lab" is being constructed to allow for the continuation of its services, including drug compounding. He also stated that the San Angelo location's patrons will be transferred to the new pharmacy location alongside any employees who have chosen to make the jump.
"The business itself and the way we operate is going to continue, so in theory, Myers is continuing as well," Urteaga said.
Urteaga said the buyout will hopefully allow pharmacy customers to capitalize on lower prices and more readily available stock.
"As we gain more traction, hopefully it'll increase the opportunity that we have to buy in bigger stock and decrease prices," Urteaga said. "We will be able to help patients of all demographics with all price points and all types of insurance, whether it's government or private, and hopefully give them the best service possible."
Urteaga was unable to provide specific dates and times regarding the transition from the Myers Drug location to Food King due to the number of factors currently being considered.
"There is a couple of elements between us coordinating our stay here with the new owners of the building and making sure they're not left awry as well as the lab that's getting built be finished," Urteaga said.
As for the Myers Drug building, Joe Thieman of Thieman Real Estate Holdings stated that the business's use of the structure will remain true to the location's history in San Angelo.
"We want to maintain the historical architecture of the building, and we'll be working with local architects and the City, regardless of what goes into this building, to maintain that aspect of it," Thieman said.
Concho Valley Homepage staff have attempted to contact Lowe's Market for comment regarding the acquisition but have not received a statement as of the time of publication.
