SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — A new bar made its debut on San Angelo's downtown nightlife scene on Sept. 13. The Up & Down Saloon is now serving, and its name means more than you might think.

According to the business's Facebook page, the saloon "offers a blend of country music, Tejano tunes and more" and sells a variety of alcoholic beverages, including tequila-infused cocktails and on-tap champagne. The bar is also partnering with local food truck establishment Pops Tacos y Mas to offer brunch options on Sundays.

Co-owners Reyes Menchaca, Louis Moreno and Brittany Milkowski opened the saloon in the building that once held Chadbourne Tavern, located at 115 S. Chadbourne St., with a plan for longevity. The previous bar closed on March 18 after over two decades of operation following the owner's decision to focus on another business in San Angelo.

"We think our approach and everything we want to do now and in the future will guarantee repeat business and build us some regulars," Menchaca said."With all that, we plan on being down here for a while."

The new bar's hours of operation are as follows, according to Menchaca:

  • Thursday: 2 p.m. - 2 a.m.
  • Friday: noon - 2 a.m.
  • Saturday: noon - 2 a.m.
  • Sunday: 11 a.m. - midnight

Menchaca stated that the Up & Down Saloon's name is derived from a club in Mexico that the owners and their friends visited often.

"There was a two-story bar in Acuna, Mexico, that we all went to in college and whatnot," Menchaca said. "It was a great time, and it kind of embodied the spirit that we want to have downtown."

The friend who suggested naming the bar the Up & Down Saloon also died recently, further adding to the significance of the business's name.

"We were definitely going to do it regardless, but it just definitely has a lot more meaning now that we're open and he's no longer with us," Menchaca said.

With the saloon now open, the owners plan to stand out in downtown San Angelo by emphasizing customer service and hospitality.

"We really want to focus on building that camaraderie with the guests and understanding that when you come in here, you get great service with great drinks," Moreno said.
