SAN ANGELO, Texas – Behind two home runs, the No. 2 Angelo State baseball team defeated Sul Ross State by a score of 14-2 on a chilly Valentine's Day afternoon at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.

With the victory, the Rams improve to a 7-2 record on the season while dropping the Lobos to 1-8.

Action picked up in the bottom of the second when Lane Hutchinson led off the inning with a single through the left side. After a single from Chase Pendley and a hit-by-pitch drawn by Austin Beck, Christian Garnette hit a sacrifice fly to right field for first run of the ballgame. In the following at-bat, Justin Harris homered over the left-center wall to make it an early 3-0 lead.

Sul Ross State responded in the top of the third when the Lobos pieced together a few one out singles to cut the Rams lead down to one before Nick Wilson limited the damage with a strikeout and a pickoff. The senior from Carrolton, Texas finished his third start as a Ram pitching four complete innings where he allowed the two aforementioned earned runs off five hits, two walks while striking out six to earn his second victory of the season.

The Rams put the game out of reach in the ensuing half inning when Jacob Guerrero led off with a triple to right center field. After Tayten Tredaway was hit by a pitch, Weston Valasek singled to center to score Guerrero. The Blue and Gold then went on to score seven additional runs in the inning highlighted by a two RBI double to left center from Harris to extend the lead back to eight runs.

Josh Reed relieved Wilson to begin the fifth inning and in his first appearance as a Ram, the redshirt-freshman allowed just two baserunners in his three innings of work and struck out four to earn his first-career save.

ASU scratched across the final three runs with a sacrifice fly from Valasek in the fifth and a two-run home run from Austin Beck in the sixth to bring the game to its final score.

The Rams and Lobos will continue the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 15 with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
