SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — 2024 was a crazy year.

From over a million dollar theft at Walmart to a murder that happened just hours into the New Year, there was some serious crime that took place in San Angelo this year. Take a look at Concho Valley Homepage's pick for the most notable crimes that took place this year:

New Year's Killing

Ryan Renfroe was arrested and taken into custody following a shooting that left Jakob Jones dead in downtown San Angelo around 3 a.m. January 1.

CVHP previously reported that the shooting stemmed from a confrontation that occurred earlier. Renfroe and Jones agreed to meet in an alleyway in downtown San Angelo. After the shooting, first responders attempted to administer life-saving treatment. Jones died at the scene.

Renfroe was sentenced to life in prison on Nov. 23.

Woman found dead in own home, husband arrested

James Barker was taken into custody on March 5 by the Ballinger Police Department and charged with murder after his wife was found dead in her own home.

BPD reported that officers were dispatched to Mary Barker's home for a welfare check. Her husband, James, was arrested later that day.

According to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Barker received a sentence of 50 years.

Manhunt ends in officer-involved shooting, suspect dead

A man wanted for murdering a 74-year-old in Odessa ended in Mertzon after an officer-involved shooting took place.

Trevor James Myrick, 26, of Hobbs, New Mexico was killed after the Texas Department of Public Safety located him on April 16 near Duncan Avenue and North Broadway Street in Mertzon.

During the manhunt, it is reported that Myrick stole a vehicle from Joe Cuevas.

“My day was just like normal,” Cuevas said. “I dropped my kid off at school and was doing my normal routine, going from there and picking up material. After that I met a customer at the new job site that’s going up at a dragway in town off Arden Road. I left there and came to my job site about 6 miles west of Mertzon.”

After crashing a stolen Ford Mustang, Myrick came across Cuevas' Tahoe that was parked at a job site in Mertzon.

Woman sentenced for stealing over $2M from Wall Co-Op Country Store

Mina Abbott was sentenced to 42 months in jail for unauthorized transactions with an access device in federal court and the restitution of $2,146,885.19.

Abbott spent $176,569.73 from May 1, 2022, to April 30, 2023. Abbott also conducted transactions during a vacation in July 2022 and a personal trip in 2023. These included several withdrawals from ATM machines, charges of $500.88 at Academy Sporting Goods and $726.45 at Walmart in Owensboro, Kentucky, a charge of $557.99 at the Opry Shop and a charge of $294.41 at Enterprise Rent-a-Car in Nashville, Tennessee and several unauthorized charges made in Boston, Massachusetts.

Police: 2 arrested after over $1M stolen from San Angelo Walmart

The San Angelo Police Department was notified on July 23 of an ongoing "large-scale theft operation" at the Walmart Neighborhood Market on Sherwood Way.

Preliminary findings uncovered by detectives indicate that approximately $1.05 million had been stolen from the store "over the course of the past year" by employees. Ryan Munoz, 18, and Carmelo Amigleo, 18, were both arrested on July 28 after a warrant was issued.

Zkel Grant was later arrested on Aug. 7 for involvement in the theft from Walmart and was charged with theft of property between $30,000 and $150,000.

Court records state that Munoz and Amigleo were charged with theft of property valued at more than $300,000.

Amigleo pleaded guilty to eight years of community supervision and restitution of $732,774 jointly or severally with a co-defendant.
