SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers Foundation has organized an online fundraiser for a former San Angelo TxDPS recruiting sergeant after he was "seriously injured" in a vehicle crash.
According to the fundraiser's Help a Hero online donation portal, TxDPS Sgt. Daniel Cross was involved in a vehicle crash on Dec. 14 while traveling to work in Operation Lone Star. The crash was caused after "a semi-truck towing a low-bed trailer attempted a U-turn at the center median," which left the trailer "stranded and blocking both westbound lanes of IH-10 near MM 95."
Cross' vehicle struck the trailer, leaving Cross "seriously injured." He was taken to the Del Sol Medical Center. The fundraiser portal stated that Cross "remains in stable condition but faces a lengthy recovery."
The fundraiser was created on Dec. 19 by the TxDPS Troopers Foundation with the goal of gathering funds to help cover "Cross's expenses to his family as they are staying in a hotel in the Midland area while he recovers."
"Help-a-Hero charges a fee up front, 100% of the funds raised will go to the Cross family," the fundraiser's cause details read. "If you are able, please donate."
Cross formerly worked as a TxDPS recruiting sergeant in San Angelo. He currently works as a recruiting sergeant in the Southeast Texas region, according to the TxDPS website.
TxDPS Sgt. Justin Baker stated that Cross is also a member of the Texas Department of Public Safety Officers Association. He said that the organization provides several forms of aid to its members, including those who are injured or in a time of crisis.
"Nobody's going to be alone in time of need when unfortunate events occur when working for this department or being a member of the association," Baker said.
The fundraiser has raised $3,460 of its $10,000 goal as of the time of publication, with funds being donated from 64 supporters. The donation portal states that the fundraiser will conclude in 42 days.
"We wish the Cross family, and all involved a speedy recovery," the fundraiser's cause details read.
