Mayor Gunter Proclaims January as School Board Recognition Month in San Angelo to Honor ISD Trustees

January 14, 2025

On Tuesday morning, January 7, Mayor Brenda Gunter officially proclaimed January as School Board Recognition Month in San Angelo during the City Council meeting, honoring the dedicated members of the San Angelo ISD Board of Trustees.

January is designated as School Board Recognition Month across the state of Texas. This year’s theme, “Leadership for Tomorrow’s Texas,” underscores the critical role of school board trustees in shaping the future of education. The theme highlights how trustees guide their districts to provide students with opportunities that prepare them for success in college, careers, and life.

The San Angelo ISD Board of Trustees, an elected group of volunteers who serve without compensation, is the governing body of the school district. Trustees are responsible for setting policies, overseeing budgets, hiring and evaluating the superintendent, advocating for education and serving as a vital link between the community and the school district. By gathering input from parents, students and other stakeholders, they ensure that decision-making is informed and responsive to the needs of the community.

This committed group of volunteers are strong advocates for the almost 13,000 students enrolled in San Angelo ISD. They are deeply dedicated to the district’s mission of providing an engaging, relevant and inspiring education that equips students to become future-ready graduates.

School board members play a vital role in ensuring that public schools offer a high-quality education, manage resources effectively, and meet the needs of students, families, and the broader community.

During the City Council meeting, Mayor Gunter delivered the official proclamation, with City Council members, community leaders, SAISD Trustees and administration in attendance to show their support:

"The mission of public schools is to meet the diverse educational needs of all children and to empower them to become competent, productive contributors to our society and an ever-changing world.

Our San Angelo ISD Board members are committed to the children of San Angelo and believe all children can be successful, life-long learners and that the best education is tailored to each child's individual needs to support their hopes and dreams. This distinguished group of servant leaders includes Board President Dr. Taylor Kingman, Vice President Mrs. Ami Mizell-Flint, Secretary Mr. Gerard Gallegos, Treasurer Mr. Bill Dendle, Mrs. Pam Duncan, Dr. Kyle Mills and Mrs. Lupita Arroyo.

San Angelo ISD board members work closely with parents, educational professionals, and other community members to create the educational vision we want for our students. They are responsible for ensuring the structure that provides a solid foundation for our school system, and dedicate numerous unpaid personal hours to support and lead our San Angelo schools.

Our San Angelo ISD school board members are strong advocates for public education and are responsible for communicating the needs of the school district to the public and the public’s expectations to the district.

Therefore, I, Brenda Gunter, Mayor of the City of San Angelo, Texas, on behalf of the City Council, declare our appreciation to the members of the San Angelo Independent School Board and proclaim the month of January 2025 as “School Board Recognition Month” in San Angelo, Texas, and urge all citizens to join us and San Angelo ISD in recognizing the dedication and hard work of the San Angelo ISD school board members and to partner with them to mold an education system that meets the needs of both today’s and tomorrow’s children and produces future-ready graduates."

Following the proclamation, SAISD Board President Dr. Kingman also expressed his appreciation to the members of the San Angelo City Council. “Thank you to the City,” said Dr. Kingman. “It’s our goal as a group and a district to provide the best education for kids in this city and be the district that everyone wants to be and help promote this city and this great town.”

Please join Mayor Gunter, the City of San Angelo and SAISD in thanking each of our seven hard-working trustees for their dedicated leadership in public education and their continuing service to the children of San Angelo ISD. On behalf of the faculty, staff and students of San Angelo ISD, we sincerely thank you and honor how you exemplify how at SAISD, our people make the difference.
