SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 4 Angelo State baseball team secured the doubleheader sweep of Wayland Baptist by a combined score of 31-13 on a clear Tuesday evening at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.

With the win, the Rams snap a three-game losing streak while improving to a 20-6 overall record while dropping the Pioneers to 14-13.

GAME ONE: ASU 13, WBU 6

The Rams came out the gates scoring as Ethan Flodstrom and Brett Smajstrla drew walks to lead off the bottom of the first. After a hit by pitch drawn by Tayten Tredaway loaded the bases, Lane Hutchinson singled through the left side to score the first two runs of the ballgame and forced a pitching change. After a walk from Austin Beck loaded the bases for a second time, a ground out from Christian Garnette and a balk completed the five run frame. In the following inning, Austin Beck and Garnette pieced together a couple singles to add three more runs and extend the lead to eight runs.

The Pioneers responded in the top of the third as two walks led to an RBI single and a fielder's choice to cut the lead down to six runs off Rams' starter Jude Stephens. Stephens earned his first pitching win of the season as he allowed the two aforementioned runs off a hit and three walks while striking out three.

ASU matched the runs given up in the previous inning as the Rams loaded the bases for a third time for Flodstrom to score on a wild pitch before a ground out from Hutchinson scored Smajstrla. In the ensuing inning, Beck was hit by a pitch and proceeded to steal second and third base and scored on a Chase Pendley ground out.

Wayland Baptist continued to battle back late in the game as a solo homer in the fifth and three hits in the sixth cut the Rams lead down to seven runs before Scott Ellis and Clayton Broeder limited the damage and eventually finished the ballgame.

GAME TWO: ASU 18, WBU 7

The second game of the doubleheader saw the Pioneers and the Rams go back and forth on the score board. WBU hit a sacrifice fly in the game's opening frame to strike first. ASU countered with a grand slam off the bat of Chase Pendley and an RBI triple from Jaxon Weatherly to put up a five spot in the ensuing half inning. The Pioneers responded with a two-RBI triple and RBI single to cut the lead down to one run. Finally, in the top of the third, a solo home run tied the game at five runs apiece.

From the bottom of third inning forward, the game belonged to the Rams as the Blue and Gold scored eight runs highlighted by RBI doubles from Justin Harris and Ethan Flodstrom to make it a 13-5 ballgame after four complete innings.

Wayland Baptist did not give in as a lead off single put a runner aboard for the two run home run that followed and forced out Jude Cook. The junior from Lubbock, Texas turned in a performance where he allowed three earned runs off five hits while collecting a strikeout to secure his first win of the season. Luke Olson came on in relief and proceeded to allow just one more runner aboard through the end of the game as he collected the three inning save, his second of the year.

ASU scored the final four runs of the ballgame in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of a Weston Valasek two-RBI single and a two run homer from Austin Beck.

The Rams will be back in action against Texas A&M International when the Dustdevils come to town for a four game Lone Star Conference series beginning on Friday, Mar. 21.
