SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — Click the video above to preview Menard's upcoming playoff matchup versus Gordon and hear from Yellowjackets head coach Clay Holland.
After missing the playoffs a year ago, the Menard Yellowjackets return to the Area Round with a tall task standing in their way. Menard will go head-to-head with the undefeated defending state champion Gordon Longhorns on Thursday, Nov. 21 in Hermleigh, Texas.
A notable headline going into this intriguing matchup is Menard's high-octane offense, which is averaging approximately 45 points scored per game this season. In fact, the Yellowjackets scored 80+ points in back-to-back games in weeks eight and nine this season.
All that being said, Menard head coach Clay Holland says his team's recipe for success is its run game and offensive line. High-scoring shootouts with offensive fireworks may be impressive on paper, but Holland is more focused on mastering fundamentals.
"We do not want to score 80 points in a game. That's not the goal. We want to control the line of scrimmage, we want to control the clock and we want to play well on defense," Holland said.
