SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — A new sheriff assumed office in Coke County during the turn of the year after the previous sheriff retired following decades of service.

Sheriff Billy Williams assumed the role on Jan. 1 after former Sheriff Wayne McCutchen retired on Dec. 31, 2024, following 36 years of service. A sheriff's office representative shared that McCutchen served exclusively in the Coke County Sheriff's Office throughout the years.

In a statement issued via social media on Jan. 1, Williams addressed the public regarding what it means to be sheriff and what he hopes to accomplish while acting in the role.

"The job of a sheriff is not just about enforcing the law; it's about leading with integrity, fostering trust, and making sure that every citizen, every family, and every visitor to Coke County feels safe and respected," Williams said. "I promise to do that with every ounce of dedication and effort I have."

Williams said that he intends "to focus on three key priorities" during his tenure. These priorities and their descriptions are as follows, as per Williams' public statement:

  • Community Engagement: "The relationship between law enforcement and the public must be based on trust and cooperation. My door will always be open to citizens, and we will engage more with local organizations, schools, and businesses to make sure that we are working together to solve problems before they escalate."
  • Transparency and Accountability: "In every action we take, I will ensure transparency. Our department will be held to the highest standards, and I will lead by example. Whether it's through community meetings, updates, or the way we handle critical incidents, I am committed to being a sheriff who answers to you — the people."
  • Crime Prevention and Response: "Public safety will always be my top priority. We will focus not only on responding to emergencies but also on proactive crime prevention through education, outreach, and the responsible use of technology."

Williams stated that he, alongside the community, will "continue to build on the strong foundation" created by McCutchen and other former sheriffs. He also acknowledged the "courage," "professionalism" and "commitment" of those who work in the sheriff's office, calling the deputies and administrative staff "the backbone of this office."

Williams called on the citizens of Coke County to assist the agency as he begins to serve as the county's sheriff.

"To the citizens of Coke County, I ask for your continued partnership," Williams said. "Your role in this community is just as vital as mine. Together, we can face any challenge, celebrate every success, and keep Coke County a place we are all proud to call home."
