SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 1 Angelo State baseball team swept the doubleheader against No. 24 St. Edward's by a combined score of 11-7 to begin a crucial four game Lone Star Conference series at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.

With the victories, the Rams improve the winning streak to 12 games while becoming the first team in the LSC to secure win number 30 on the season while dropping the Hilltoppers to a 27-13 (26-12) record.

GAME ONE: ASU 5, StEU 4

The Hilltoppers struck first in the game's opening inning as back-to-back walks put runners aboard for a single and a ground out to allow StEU to take an early 2-0 lead.

Both teams traded runs soon thereafter as in the bottom of the second, Austin Beck laid down a bunt single to score Tayten Tredaway from first base. St. Edward's quickly responded in the ensuing half inning as a one-out walk and a double put a runner at third for the following sacrifice fly to maintain the two run deficit against ASU.

The Rams responded once again in the bottom of the third when Jacob Guerrero drew a two-out walk and eventually stole second. Chase Pendley brought him in during the next at-bat with a single to center field.

In the bottom of the fourth, back-to-back doubles from Blake Wilhoite and Justin Harris allowed the Rams to tie the ballgame at three runs apiece. However, it would not last long as a lead off single in the top of the fifth led to yet another Hilltopper run off a RBI single against Rams' starter Nick Wilson before Scott Ellis came in and limited the damage.

Ellis ended up pitching the last three innings for the Rams and called back to his form from the 2023 season as the senior delivered three shutout innings where he allowed just one hit and walk apiece while collecting three strikeouts to earn his first victory of the 2025 campaign.

The bottom of the sixth gave the home crowd at FFAFCCUS a second tie ballgame when Tayten Tredaway led off the inning with a double. After going to third on a balk, Beck singled to center field to make it a 4-4 ballgame.

Finally, in the bottom of the seventh, Guerrero reached base on a fielder's choice and after advancing to second on a wild pitch, a throwing error allowed the runner to score to walk it off for the Rams.

GAME TWO: ASU 6, StEU 3

Opposite of the day's first game, it was ASU that struck first in game two as Ethan Flodstrom singled to lead off the inning before Chase Pendley doubled to put runners in scoring position for a RBI ground out from Weston Valasek and a RBI single courtesy of Lane Hutchinson to gives the Rams a quick two run lead.

The Rams doubled that lead an inning later as Blake Wilhoite was hit by a pitch and later moved to second on a ground out. Flodstrom followed with an RBI single who then scored on the eventual triple from Jacob Guerrero.

St. Edward's answered back in the top of the fifth as a lead off single led to the day's only home run over the left field wall that cut the lead in half.

Dax Dathe was given the start in game two and delivered yet another fantastic outing as the senior tossed six complete innings where he allowed the two aforementioned earned runs off five hits and a walk while striking out eight to improve to a 6-1 record.

The Blue and Gold responded in the bottom of the fifth as doubles by Flodstrom, Guerrero and Valasek stretched the lead back to four runs.

The Hilltoppers battled back in the top of the seventh as they pieced together a walk and a single to scratch a run across before Josh Reed collected the strikeout to end the ballgame.

Angelo State baseball is back in action against the Hilltoppers on Sunday, Apr. 6 with the first pitch from Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium scheduled for 3 p.m.
