SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team extended its winning streak to five games on Saturday at Mayer Softball Field, defeating Western New Mexico 6-0 in game one before a five-run seventh inning saw the nation's fourth-ranked team walk off the Mustangs 6-5 to secure the series sweep.
The Rambelles opened the scoring in game two with a two-out infield single in the second inning by Paris Brienesse.
A two-out rally in the third inning saw the Rambelles cross the plate four times. Laylonna Applin ripped a double to left center and a pitch hit Tatiana Trotter to set up Ashton McMillan, whose pop-up died in the wind, resulting in a double knocking in a run.
Averie Gunther followed with a triple over the left fielder's head, which scored two runs. Gunther would score during the next at bat on a wild pitch.
Applin singled with one out in the fifth and scored on McMillan's second double of the game, a shot down the left field line.
Cheyenne Floyd improves to 12-2 on the season, throwing five shutout innings and only allowing two hits and two walks while striking out nine Mustangs, including the first five she matched up against.
Raegan Sucher threw a perfect two innings in relief, recording one strikeout.
Game two was scoreless until the fourth inning, when an Ashton McMillan walk, stolen base and a Mustangs error combined to put runners on the corners before McMillan scored the first run of game two on an attempted double steal.
The Mustangs would bust the game open, scoring five runs with two outs in the top of the fifth inning, courtesy of two home runs.
The score remained 5-1 until the bottom of the seventh inning, when Lauren De La Cruz led the frame off with a double. Abby Brand followed with her first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field that halved the deficit.
A pair of walks and a single loaded the bases for McMillan, who drew a walk to make it 5-4. The Rambelles tied the game on a wild pitch before Zoey De Baca stepped up to the plate and laid down a picture-perfect bunt, which scored Trotter and secured the comeback win and the sweep.
Amelia Hatthorn started in the circle before making way for Bri Waters and Sucher, and the freshmen combined to throw the final 2.1 innings, allowing only two hits and striking out three. Sucher picked up the win, the first win of her collegiate career.
The Rambelles improve to 24-4 on the season and 15-3 in LSC play. They are back in action tomorrow against Eastern New Mexico at 2 p.m.
