LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 2 Angelo State baseball team pieced together 19 hits to down Lubbock Christian by a final score of 19-9 in what was a showcase of the nation's top offenses on Friday evening at Hays Field.
With the victory, the Rams improve to an 18-3 record in both the Lone Star Conference and overall while dropping the Chaps to 10-9, 9-8, respectively.
The Rams came out swinging, putting up nine total runs through the game's first two innings. In the game's opening frame, back-to-back walks led to back-to-back RBI singles from Weston Valasek and Lane Hutchinson, which scored Ethan Flodstrom and Jacob Guerrero, respectively. Following an RBI groundout by Tayten Tredaway, Austin Beck and Blake Wilhoite both hit RBI singles up the middle to conclude the first inning. In the second, the Blue and Gold utilized doubles from Guerrero and Hutchinson as well as a triple from Tredaway to complete the nine-run start.
Despite the hot start, the Chaps were able to respond with nine runs of their own through the game's first three innings off Rams' starter Nick Wilson, highlighted by two solo home runs in the bottom of the first. However, that is where the scoring ended for the Chaps as Wilson, Keene Kreusler and Luke Olson did not allow a Chaparral back into scoring position. Wilson pitched through the end of the sixth and allowed the nine aforementioned earned runs off 10 hits and two walks while striking out six. His effort earned him the win and improved to a 5-0 record.
After the Chaps tied the game, the Rams responded with a three-run top of the fourth utilizing a Valasek double, a bases-loaded walk drawn by Beck and a Wilhoite sacrifice fly to retake the lead. Jacob Guerrero hit his second triple to lead off the ensuing inning and tied a school record for triples in a game. He was immediately scored, thanks to a Chase Pendley double down the left field line to extend the lead to four runs.
Prior to the stretch, ASU tagged on two more runs courtesy of an RBI double by Beck to make it a 15-9 game. The Blue and Gold scored its final four runs of the ball game in the top of the eighth and ninth innings, highlighted by a solo homer off the bat of Justin Harris to bring the game to its final score.
The Rams and Chaps will take a day off tomorrow to avoid inclement weather and will continue the series with a doubleheader on Sunday, Mar. 9, with the first pitch from Hays Field scheduled for 1 p.m.
