LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 2 Angelo State baseball team dropped the doubleheader to Lubbock Christian by a combined score of 19-17 in what was two, one-score ballgames with both ending in walk off fashion.
With the results, the Rams drop to a 18-5 record overall and in Lone Star Conference play while the Chaps improve to 12-9 over and 11-8 in conference.
GAME ONE: LCU 6, ASU 5
Lubbock Christian kicked off the scoring in game one, using a lead-off double that led into an RBI single for the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning.
Following a quiet second inning, Austin Beck led off the top of the third with a double to left field. After a bunt moved him to third, Justin Harris grounded out to score the runner and tie the game.
Back-and-forth scoring ensued over the following three frames, with LCU taking the lead back with a two-run bottom of the third. Then, RBIs from Tayten Tredaway and Blake Wilhoite tied the game in the top of the fourth before the Chaps retook the lead with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning.
In the top of the sixth, Blake Wilhoite drew a one-out hit-by-pitch. After getting moved into scoring position courtesy of a wild pitch and a balk, Harris hit a double to left center field to tie the game for a third time. One batter later, Jacob Guerrero gave the Rams the lead with a single to left field. However, this did not last long as the Chaps utilized a lead off walk and timely hitting to tie the game before loading the bases off Josh Reed, who then gave up a walk to give the Chaps the walk-off victory.
GAME TWO: LCU 13, ASU 12
The Rams came out the gates swinging in game two, as the team put up five runs through the games first three innings, highlighted by a Weston Valasek RBI triple followed by a Lane Hutchinson RBI single in the third.
However, the lead would be short-lived as the Chaps responded with a single and a three-run homer to put up a six-spot in the bottom of the third to take their first lead of the contest.
Hutchinson tied things up in the top of the fifth with a RBI single to score Valasek, who led off the inning with his second triple of the ballgame. The Chaparrals then put up another three runs in the ensuing inning with the second three run homer of the game to lead 9-6.
The Rams cut into the deficit with a two run top of the sixth before Ethan Flodstrom hit a two-run double to right center to retake the lead, he would score the third run of the inning off a wild pitch before Lane Hutchinson drew a bases loaded walk to go up three runs.
Similar to game one of the day, the Chaps battled back in the bottom of the seventh and pieced together five hits to score four runs off reliever Clayton Broeder and walk off the Rams for the second consecutive game.
The Rams will go for the series split against the Chaps on Monday, Mar. 10th with the first pitch from Hays Field scheduled for 1 p.m.
