AUSTIN – The Angelo State softball team closed their weekend with two wins in the Capitol City on Sunday, defeating St. Edward's 16-7 in game one before pulling out a 4-3, eight-inning win in game two this afternoon.
Tatiana Trotter kicked off the scoring in game one with a two-run home run to left field, her second home run in as many games.
The score stayed 2-0 until the fourth inning, when the Rambelles would strike for five runs.
A pair of bunt singles would sandwich a walk to load the bases, and the first run crossed the plate on a bases-loaded walk.
Erin Plunkett would step to the plate and deliver the Rambelles' second grand slam in as many games to make it 7-0.
The Hilltoppers scored four in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-4.
Abby Brand put two more runs on the board the following inning with a two-out double to center field, her first extra-base hit of the season.
Laylonna Applin doubled to lead off the inning, and Trotter hit her second home run; this is the first multi-homer game of the junior's career.
St. Edward's scored three times in the sixth inning, making the scoreline 11-7.
The Rambelles would end the game with a five-run inning in the seventh, which Plunkett led off by tripling and scoring on a wild pitch. Applin would hit an opposite-field home run, her eighth round tripper in 2025.
Ashton McMillan would single in a run later in the inning before scoring later a Kamryn Loeffler groundout.
A two-out rally saw the scoring capped by a Brand single.
Cheyenne Floyd earned her 11th win of the season, allowing five hits and four runs in four innings, striking out two. Matie Wolkow threw the final three innings in relief to pick up her second save of the weekend.
The Rambelles struck first in game two, with Laylonna Applin hitting an opposite-field home run in the top of the first inning.
The Hilltoppers tied the game in the bottom of the third inning before the Rambelles retook the lead the following inning with a Waters RBI single.
The Hilltoppers tied the game at 2-all in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run.
A two-out error in the top of the seventh put the Rambelles ahead, but the hosts knocked a two-out double to right field to force extra innings.
The Rambelles scored the final run on a double steal with two outs to make it 4-3 in the eighth inning and held SEU at bay for the win and the sweep.
Waters, who started the game in the circle, threw five innings, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out four. Amelia Hatthron threw the final three innings in relief, allowing three hits and one run and picking up the win.
The Rambelles improve to 22-4 on the season and end their East Division schedule with a 13-3 record. They are back home next weekend to open West Division play against Western New Mexico and Eastern New Mexico.
