SAN ANTONIO – The Angelo State softball team split their doubleheader this evening in San Antonio against St. Mary's, dropping game one 6-1 before bouncing back with a 13-4, five-inning run-rule win in game two at The Park at St. Mary's.
The Rambelles scored first in game one, with a second-inning double by Averie Gunther and a Lauren De La Cruz infield single putting runners on base, with Gunther scoring later in the inning on a Rattler error.
The Rattlers would strike for six runs on five hits and a Rambelles error in the bottom half of the inning, and the rest of the game played out as a stalemate, finishing 6-1 in the Rattlers' favor.
The Rambelles bounced back quickly in game two, with Laylonna Applin doubling in the top of the first inning before scoring on an Ashton McMillan sacrifice fly.
The Rambelles would push five runs across the plate the next inning. Singles by Bri Waters, Zoey De Baca and Paris Brienesse to lead off the inning loaded the bases for Erin Plunkett, who singled in the first run.
Applin, the next batter, tripled to right center to clear the bases and make it 5-0.
Trotter followed with an RBI single, scoring Applin and pushing the scoreline to 6-0.
The Rattlers would hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning to score their first two runs in game two and put up another run the following inning.
Applin drew a one-out walk in the fourth inning, stole second, and scored on a McMillan single; the Rattlers matched with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning.
The fifth inning saw the Rambelles strike for six runs. A pair of walks and a single by the bottom of the Rambelles' lineup loaded the bases, and back-to-back bases-loaded walks by Plunkett and Applin plated a pair of runs.
Trotter, the next batter, hit a grand slam to right center field to score the final four runs; the home run is the first of the season for the Rambelles' center fielder and her first-career grand slam.
Trotter's grand slam is the first for the Rambelles since Paxton Scheurer hit one against Texas Woman's on March 8th, 2023.
Bri Waters, who collected her first career hit from the sixth spot in the lineup, also picked up the win in the circle, throwing three innings and allowing six hits and three earned runs. In relief, Matie Wolkow threw the final two innings, facing one batter over the minimum.
The Rambelles are now 20-4 on the season; they close their weekend out on Sunday in Austin, facing St. Edward's, who split their doubleheader today against Lubbock Christian.
