KINGSVILLE, Texas – The No. 4 Angelo State baseball team defeated Texas A&M-Kingsville in a doubleheader by a combined score of 13-5 on a warm Monday afternoon at Nolan Ryan Field.
With the victories, the Rams secured the series sweep of the Javelinas and improved to a 28-6 (26-6) record, while TAMUK fell to 19-19 (18-18).
GAME ONE: ASU 4, TAMUK 3
The Rams struck first in the game's opening frame when Jacob Guerrero drew a one-out walk. After he advanced to second on a passed ball and stole third, Chase Pendley singled to center field to score the first run of the ballgame.
Kingsville responded in the bottom of the second as the Javelinas pieced together a single, three walks and two hit-by-pitches to score three runs off Rams starter Alizaeh Gutierrez and reliever Keene Kreusler.
In the top of the fifth, Blake Wilhoite drew a one-out walk and after Justin Harris advanced him with a single to left field, Ethan Flodstrom sliced an RBI single to left field for the first run of the inning. After a pitching change, Pendley reached first on a wild pitch after striking out, which also scored Harris to tie the game at three.
A couple of innings later, Harris led off the inning with a double down the left field line and later, advanced to third on an error before Pendley hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score the go-ahead run which led to the Rams victory after Josh Reed pitched the final two and a third innings to earn the win.
GAME TWO: ASU 9, TAMUK 2
Once again, the Rams struck first, this time in the top of the third inning when Justin Harris led off being hit by a pitch. Back-to-back singles from Ethan Flodstrom and Jacob Guerrero scored Harris for the first run of the ballgame. Following another hit-by-pitch and a ground out, Lane Hutchinson singled to left field, scoring Chase Pendley and Guerrero to give the Rams a 3-0 lead.
The top of the fifth proved fruitful for the Rams' offense for the second game in a row as two walks and an error loaded the bases for a Lane Hutchinson single, a Tayten Tredaway walk, and an Austin Back sacrifice fly doubled the lead.
The Javelinas responded in the ensuing half inning as three straight hits scored their first run of the ballgame before the Rams got the run back when an error scored Justin Harris from third base after he reached on a lead off walk.
After his stellar performance out of the bullpen in the series against Texas A&M International, Ryan Free was given the start in game two and delivered 4.2 innings where he allowed the aforementioned earned run off three hits and two walks while striking out four as the senior from Frisco, Texas notched his second pitching win of the season.
The Rams scored their final two runs of the series when a one-out single and a passed ball set up a Pendley and Weston Valasek RBI singles to extend the lead to 9-1.
Kingsville scratched a run across in the bottom of the ninth before Keene Kreusler forced a ground out to slam the door shut to secure the series sweep.
Angelo State baseball will be back in action on Friday, Apr. 4, when the Rams welcome St. Edwards for a critical four-game Lone Star Conference series at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
