KINGSVILLE, Texas – The No. 4 Angelo State baseball team swept the first of two doubleheaders against Texas A&M-Kingsville by a combined score of 19-1 on a humid Sunday afternoon at Nolan Ryan Field.

With the victories, the Rams improved to a 26-6 (24-6) record while dropping the Javelinas to 19-17 (18-16).

GAME ONE: ASU 7, TAMUK 0

A pitcher's duel was the story early in the front half of the doubleheader as Dax Dathe and Kingsville's Gabriel LeBlanc battled to keep the game scoreless, allowing just one hit combined through the first four innings.

The scoring broke open in the top of the fifth as Tayten Tredaway reached via an error to lead off the inning. After a hit-by-pitch and a second error loaded the bases, Justin Harris singled to score the first two runs of the game. Following an Ethan Floodstrom sacrifice bunt and Jacob Guerrero was intentionally walked to load the bases for a second time, Chase Pendley hit into a fielder's choice and Weston Valasek doubled to push the score to 5-0.

Tredaway led off the ensuing inning with a double before an infield single put him on third. After Austin Beck stole second base, Blake Wilhoite hit a sacrifice fly and Harris hit an RBI ground out extended the lead to seven runs

When the Rams delivered offense, Dathe continued his stellar outing against TAMUK. The senior right-hander sat down 16 Javelinas in a row and took a no-hit bid into the first out of the bottom of the seventh. However, Kingsville hit back-to-back singles to break up history before Dathe forced a couple of flyouts to secure his first complete-game shutout in a Ram uniform.

GAME TWO: ASU 12, TAMUK 1

The Rams continued the momentum from game one to score three runs in the opening frame of game two. Jacob Guerrero reached first on an error. After a single pushed him to third base, Weston Valasek hit a sacrifice fly for the first run of the ball game. Lane Hutchinson followed with an RBI single who then reached third on a single before he stole home to give the Rams a 3-0 lead.

The Javelinas responded in the bottom of the second as they pieced together back-to-back singles before a sacrifice bunt and a groundout scored the first and only run allowed by Nick Wilson. The senior right-hander went on to pitch five complete innings where he allowed two hits and a walk while striking out four to earn his sixth pitching win of the season.

The Blue and Gold doubled their run total in the top of the third when Chase Pendley drew a leadoff walk when Weston Valasek homered to make it a five-run ballgame. The Rams then utilized small ball as Austin Beck reached base with a two-out bunt. After Blake Wilhoite singled, both runners advanced into scoring position off a balk for Justin Harris when he bunted to score Beck.

In the top of the fifth, an error and a hit-by-pitch put two runners aboard for Harris when he homered to increase the Rams lead to eight runs. A couple batters later, with the bases loaded, Tayten Tredaway singled into right field to score two more runners and make the score 11-1.

Lastly, in the top of the seventh, Pendley drew a one out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Valasek hit an RBI single to give the game its final score as David Dressendorfer and Seth Foster shutdown the Javelinas and secure the doubleheader sweep.

The Rams and Javelinas will complete the series with a second doubleheader tomorrow, Mar. 31 with the first pitch from Nolan Ryan Field scheduled for 1 p.m.
