Alpine, Texas – The Angelo State softball team capped off a 4-0 weekend with their sweep of Sul Ross State on Sunday afternoon in Alpine. The Rambelles took game one 13-4 before finishing the sweep with a 12-1 win in game two.
In a copy of their first game from Friday against UT Permian Basin, the Rambelles scored twice in the first and five times in the second inning.
Erin Plunkett singled to lead off the game before stealing second and scoring on Laylonna Applin's double. Applin would score later in the inning on an Ashton McMillan sacrifice bunt.
The first three batters of the second inning reached base, with the first run scoring after a pitch hit Abby Brand.
An error and a double steal accounted for the subsequent two runs, and McMillan rounded out the scoring in the frame with an RBI triple to center field.
Zoey De Baca scored in the third inning on a passed ball after doubling to reach base.
Bri Waters would hit her first collegiate home run, a two-run shot, to add a pair of runs in the fifth inning.
The Rambelles would strike for three more runs in the seventh inning to bring their run total to 13 for the game, tied for the second-most runs they've scored in a single game this season.
Averie Gunther started the game in the circle before making way for Amelia Hatthorn, who threw the next two innings.
Raegan Sucher and Matie Wolkow would combine to throw the final four innings in relief.
Back-to-back home runs by Applin and Tatiana Trotter on back-to-back pitches opened the scoring in game two as the Rambelles raced out to a 2-0 lead.
The Rambelles struck for four runs in the third inning. Applin led off the inning with a triple before scoring on an error. RBI singles by Gunther and De Baca tacked on a pair of runs before the final run scored on a fielder's choice.
Another RBI fielder's choice in the fifth inning pushed the advantage to 7-0.
The Rambelles scored more runs in the seventh inning, doing so on a Gunther two-run home run and an Abby Brand bases-clearing double.
Cheyenne Floyd picked up her 16th win of the season, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out seven. Matie Wolkow threw the final inning in relief.
The Rambelles improve to 30-8 this season and 21-7 in LSC play. The Rambelles play home-and-home doubleheaders against Lubbock Christian next weekend.
