SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — A San Angelo man accused of firing a gun at two women before shooting himself in March 2024 has taken a plea deal, according to court records filed within Tom Green County.
Court records state that 42-year-old Nathan Burnett pled guilty to two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon on Jan. 7. In exchange for the deal, Burnett is to be confined in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for 15 years for each count. Each sentence is to be served concurrently.
According to an affidavit filed in relation to the charges, San Angelo Police Department officers arrived at the River Pointe Apartments on Benedict Drive at approximately 2:46 a.m. on March 2 in reference to a shooting victim. Upon arriving at the scene, an investigator learned from an officer that law enforcement had observed "a pool of blood and blood spatter" near a vehicle in the parking lot as well as a handgun lying near the pool of blood.
The officer also stated that a male, later identified as Burnett, shot himself and left the scene on foot prior to the officer's arrival. The officer said that "there were blood droplets along the sidewalk" and that "the blood droplets continued going east."
Law enforcement learned from a witness, one of the two women involved in the shooting incident who also identified herself as having been "in a previous dating relationship" with Burnett, that Burnett had sent multiple text messages to her. In these messages, Burnett was observed to be "threatening to shoot himself" just before shooting at the witness and another woman. One photo on the witness's phone showed Burnett "pointing a gun at his head."
Another witness, identified as the niece of the woman who stated they were in a previous relationship with Burnett, said that she entered the vehicle with the other woman and heard her and Burnett arguing over the phone. She said she "heard a gunshot and heard the back window shatter," adding that she saw Burnett "banging on the vehicle window."
The witness said she and the other woman had "pulled out of the parking lot to get away" from Burnett when she heard another gunshot and saw Burnett fall to the ground.
Neither of the women involved in the shooting incident reported being injured, according to the affidavit.
Burnett was found by law enforcement "inside a residence a few miles from the initial scene." Burnett appeared to have "suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head" but was conscious and breathing. He was transported to Shannon Medical Center for treatment and would later be transported to a San Antonio hospital via medi-flight.
