SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team split its doubleheader in the regular season finale Sunday afternoon at Mayer Softball Field. It blanked the nation's top-ranked team 7-0 in game one before dropping game two 6-1.

A one-out single by Laylonna Applin in the first inning set up Tatiana Trotter, whose double to right center scored Applin for the game's first run.

Leadoff walks by Carter Smith and Lauren De La Cruz put two runners on for Abby Brand, whose sacrifice fly to left field scored Smith, doubling the lead.

Erin Plunkett followed with a double to extend the lead to three runs.

The Rambelles tacked on four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, with all runs coming with two outs.

With Ashton McMillan on third base and Paris Brienesse occupying first, the Rambelles attempted a double steal. After the initial throwdown to second and a subsequent throw to third, Brienesse coaxed an errant throw from the Lady Buffs' third baseman, allowing both runners to score.

An error, a single, and a walk loaded the bases for Applin, who delivered her third hit of the ballgame, a double to left field, which scored two runs and made the game 7-0, the game's final scoreline.

Cheyenne Floyd earned her 24th win in 2025, going the distance and striking out eight Lady Buffs while only allowing four hits. She did not issue a free pass and eclipsed her 167-strikeout mark from last season.

WT's four hits are their fewest in a single game this season and their fewest in a game since April 13th, 2024. The seven-run defeat is their biggest since the LSC Tournament Semifinals in 2023 against Oklahoma Christian, where they suffered a nine-run loss.

The nation's top-ranked team scored its first runs of the day in the second inning of game two with a three-run home run.

Applin would produce an RBI groundout in the third inning to get the Rambelles on the board.

The Lady Buffs would tack on three more runs in the top of the seventh courtesy of a two-run home run and an RBI double.

An Applin single in the seventh inning forced a bad throw from a Lady Buffs infielder, seeing another run cross the plate to make it 6-2.

Amelia Hatthorn started in the circle and pitched the first six innings before making way for Matie Wolkow, who threw the final inning in relief.

The Rambelles end the regular season with a 43-11 record and a 34-10 mark in LSC play. They will be the third seed in next weekend's LSC Tournament, which will take place in Canyon.
