LAWTON, Okla. – The No. 1-ranked Angelo State baseball team extended their winning streak to 11 games with a commanding sweep over Cameron, taking both games of a Friday evening doubleheader at McCord Field by a combined score of 9-3.
With the victories, ASU improves to 41-7 on the season and becomes the first team in the Lone Star Conference to reach the 40-win mark.
GAME ONE: ASU 7, CU 3
The Rams came out hot in the opener, scoring in each of the first three innings to seize early control. Austin Beck opened the scoring in the first, forcing a throwing error on a groundout that brought home Ethan Flodstrom, who had led off the game with a walk.
In the second inning, Christian Garnette lined a single up the middle to score Brett Smajstrla, who had tripled with one out. Beck drove in another run in the third, again plating Flodstrom—this time with a groundout—after the leadoff hitter drew his second walk of the game.
Cameron responded with three runs between the third and fourth innings to briefly tie things up. A leadoff single and a double set up a sacrifice fly in the third, and a solo home run followed by an RBI single in the fourth leveled the score at 3-3.
Senior pitcher Nick Wilson, from Carrollton, went four innings for ASU, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out seven.
ASU broke things open in the seventh. Chase Pendley ripped a two-run triple to right-center, and Tayten Tredaway followed with a clutch single to left that drove in Beck and Pendley, sealing the 7-3 victory. Reliever Luke Olson shut the door with two scoreless innings to close out the game.
GAME TWO: ASU 2, CU 0
Game two belonged to Dax Dathe. The senior delivered a masterful performance, throwing his second complete game shutout of the season. Dathe allowed just four hits and a walk while striking out eight, improving his record to 8-1.
The Rams struck early again, plating a run in the second inning. Tayten Tredaway singled through the left side, stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch. In the third, Hunter Holt led off with a single and advanced to third on a passed ball before Jacob Guerrero lifted a sacrifice fly to bring him home. That would be all ASU needed, as Dathe silenced the Cameron bats the rest of the way to secure the 2-0 win.
The Rams and Aggies will continue the series tomorrow, Apr. 26 with the first pitch from McCord Field scheduled for 5 p.m.
